Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

JICA, “Japan International Cooperation Agency”, has supported the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology for capacity development since 2001. At the moment, JICA is implementing the project for the capacity development of the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology, National University of Timor-Lorosa’e. One of the project purposes is to improve the research abilities of the teaching staff. The researches which are conducted by teaching staff have received some support from the professors of the Japanese supporting universities. Some of the research results have been published on the international journals and proceedings of the symposium and the academic seminars. These valued outcomes are produced not only by the effect of the instruction by the Japanese professors but also by the teaching staff efforts. The motivation to conduct the research is rising among teaching staff recently, since research activity is one of their missions in the university. Eleven papers are published on the Special Edition of the "VERITAS" for engineering fields of UNTL to reveal their research results officially. This is the publication of the first bulletin as the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology, and it is the first to commemorate.

2000 (Urgent Rehabilitation)

The Government of Japan has been cooperating with the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology of UNTL since 2001. The first project Japan assisted was the Urgent Rehabilitation of Grant Aid from 2001 to 2003.

2006 – 2010 (Enhance Education Quality)  CADETES Project

Japan dispatched several experts in order to enhance teaching capacity of lecturers from 2003 to 2005. Japan implemented a technical cooperation project called CADETES, Capacity Development for Teaching Staff in Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology of UNTL from 2006 to 2010, which was a booster in order to enhance capacity of teaching, research and faculty management.

Project Purpose:

Improvement of  basic teaching capacity of  teaching  staff  through practical activities.

Outputs (Results):

• Curriculum has been reviewed and revised according in practical way, but faced difficulty to comply with the National Curriculum.
• Skills and knowledge of teaching staff has been improved in a certain level.
• Teaching quality has been improved in a certain level, but further improvement is necessary under appropriate faculty management

2011 – 2016  (Enhance Research Capacity) CADEFEST Project :

Project Purpose :

The Faculty provides excellent education under appropriate management and operation.

Strengthen academic capacity through practical activities

• Maintenance of curriculum, syllabus
• Maintenance of teaching materials
• Improvement of teaching skills
• Class evaluation
• Finding social needs for research activities
• Introduction of practical and research based final thesis by student
• Enhancement of collaboration with external institutions and organizations

Improvement of Faculty Management Systems

• Establishment of the committee for improvement of faculty management
• Making annual action plan for improvement of faculty management
• Periodical review on the achievement of action plan

 2016 – 2021 (Enhance Contribution to Society in Timor-Leste)

 Strengthen the research function to contribute to society and the development of the nation.

• Establish Research Center
• Strengthen Academical collaboration with external institutions and  organizations
• Strengthen linkage with local communities to contribute the development
