Abstract:

In the 21st century, as it is important to produce products with care for protecting the earth, a producer must be careful to conserve energy, save resources and reduce waste which pollutes environment. On the other hand, in case of cutting, much cutting oil was also used for lubrication and cooling. This is large problem for protecting the earth. And the forced cooling with more high cooling efficiency is also required for cutting the materials with low thermal conductivity. Therefore wet cutting using strong alkaline water with air of optimum quantity was developed. Design of the new cooling system which consists of the pipe laying for forced cooling and the blender of air with optimum shape and size is firstly performed. Then, the optimum quantities of strong alkaline water and air were investigated for high cooling efficiency in experiment. This cooling system is evaluated for tool temperature, tool life and surface roughness in real cutting. It is concluded from the results that; (1) the proposed cooling system using strong alkaline water with air of optimum quantity was very effective, (2) Heat transfer coefficient of the proposed cooling system with optimum condition was 8490 W/m2K and (3)Tool life of the proposed cooling system was 3.3 times of that of dry cutting, 2.5 times of that of ordinary wet cutting and 1.9 times of that of only strong alkaline water respectively.
