Abstract: The objective of our project is to develop an automatic survey system using smartphone devices for road condition monitoring. There are several sub tasks in this project, i.e., automatic classification of paved and unpaved road, anomaly detection including pothole and bump, estimation of pothole size, road width, road roughness, and so on. In this paper, we present a technique to estimate the road roughness level based on International Roughness Index (IRI) using smartphone sensors. The roughness level is calculated from the normalization process of two different ways of approximate IRI estimation methods, i.e., IRI-proxy and IRI based quarter-car model. The correlation coefficient between normalized method and the other two IRI methods is calculated to find out the accuracy of the proposed method.
