Abstract: Solar irradiance in the island of Atauro is evaluated by using a meteorological model for the potential assessment of photovoltaic system (PV) generation. The electric network in the island is isolated, and it has a possibility of installing a microgrid with PV systems in the future.  The model computation is performed with 1 km horizontal resolution, and solar irradiance changing due to the sun moving and cloud shadows is represented well. The annual averaged global solar irradiance is 279 W/m2 and maximum and minimum monthly averaged irradiance is 333 W/m2 in October and 127 W/m2 in June, respectively. Due to the topographical effect, the solar irradiance around mount Manucoco in the island reduces 98 W/m2 in February from the averaged irradiance of the island, 288 W/m2. The solar maps for installing PV systems are also proposed in this study.
